Cataract surgery has made extraordinary and exciting advances over the past 20 years. Last year, approximately 2.7 million Americans underwent cataract surgery. Greater than 95% of those patients now enjoy improved vision. State-of-the-art cataract surgery is now a safe, effective, and comfortable procedure performed almost exclusively on an outpatient basis.

Most cataract surgeries are now performed using microscopic size incisions, advanced ultrasonic equipment to fragment cataracts into tiny fragments, and foldable intraocular lenses (IOLs) to maintain small incision size. Cataract surgery today is the result of extraordinary technological and surgical advancements that allows millions of people to once again enjoy crisp and clear vision. A true marvel of modern medicine, cataract surgery may restore vision to levels you may have never thought possible.

Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults over 60. Cataracts affect

42% of Americans between the ages of 52 and 64.

Each year about 1.4 million people in the United States alone receive cataract surgery and have intraocular lens (IOL) implants. The prosthetic replacement lens, which is placed into the eye at the time of surgery, greatly improves the vision.

What are the symptoms?

The most common symptoms of a cataract are:

  • Cloudy or blurry vision.
  • Problems with light. These can include headlights that seem too bright at night; glare from lamps or very bright sunlight; or a halo around lights.
  • Colors that seem faded.
  • Poor night vision.
  • Double or multiple vision (this symptom often goes away as the cataract grows).
  • Frequent changes in your eyeglasses or contact lenses

These symptoms can also be a sign of other eye problems. If you have any of these symptoms, check with your eye doctor.

When a cataract is small, you may not notice any changes in your vision. Vision gets worse gradually. Some people with a cataract find that their close-up vision suddenly improves, but this is temporary. Vision is likely to get worse again as the cataract grows.

Although researchers are learning more about cataracts, no one knows for sure what causes them.

Scientists think there may be several causes, including smoking, diabetes, and excessive exposure to sunlight.
