Dr. Craig W. Young is nationally recognized as an expert in ophthalmology and a pioneer in advanced surgical techniques. Dr. Young resides in Glenburn and has been practicing in Aroostook County and Bangor for the past twenty five years. He maintains offices in Presque Isle, Dover - Foxcroft, Caribou, Madawaska, Houlton and Medway. He also maintains an ambulatory surgical center in Presque Isle. Combined with the Bangor facility, these offices and centers form the Vision Care of Maine network.
Dr. Young was one of the earliest proponents of phacoemulsification at a time when others could not appreciate the value of the procedure. Phacoemulsification is now the preferred method nationwide for removal of cataracts. No surgeon in the state has more experience with this procedure than Dr. Young. Dr. Young introduced the first YAG laser to Maine, which is now the standard treatment for secondary cataract. He is the only ophthalmologist in Maine who participated in a Food & Drug Administration study on multi-focal intraocular lens implants, the newest treatment for vision correction after cataract surgery.
Dr. Young is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is the only surgeon in the state who is certified by the American Board of Eye Surgery. He is the past president of the Maine Medical Association as well as an active member in the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the Outpatient Ophthalmic Surgery Society, and the Maine Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons.
Dr. Young holds two United States patents on a revolutionary new lens implant that is designed specifically to reduce the likelihood of the need for laser surgery of the eye after a cataract has been removed.
