Dr. Jennifer (Walston) Haverkamp was born and raised in Wichita, Kansas. Shortly after marrying her husband, Alan, in 1998, she accepted a position as an optometrist assistant with Eye Care Associates. Within 6 months of working there she realized how exciting the field of optometry is and began pursuing her degree. Their son, Henry, was born in 2001.
She first received an associates degree from Butler County Community College, and then finished her degree at Wichita State University with a bachelor of general studies in chemistry in 2004. She attended optometry school at the Southern College of Optometry (SCO) in Memphis, Tennessee, graduating in May 2008. She was a member of the American Optometric Student Association (AOSA) while in school. During her fourth year she completed three clinical rotations. Her first rotation was at the Vitreoretinal Foundation— Eye Specialty Group in Memphis, Tennessee with an emphasis on ocular pathology and treatment. Her second externship was at Coldwater Vision Center in Coldwater, Mississippi. This was a private practice with an emphasis on primary care, ocular disease, and practice management. She finished her clinical rotations at The Eye Center, the clinic at SCO. Here, she experienced full-scope optometry, including: adult and pediatric primary care, ocular disease, contact lens, vision therapy, and low vision.
She completed a Bausch & Lomb Vision Shaping Treatment Design Certification Program in March of 2008 for Orthokeratology. In June of 2008, she travelled to Jacksonville, Florida for a Specialty Contact Lens Training Seminar at the Johnson and Johnson Vision Care Institute, covering approaches for fitting patients who have presbyopia, astigmatism, and other conditions.
Her interests include reading, playing Wii video games, and dancing. She and her family plan to take full advantage of everything the beautiful state of Maine has to offer.
