Dr. Bowman was a practicing surgeon for over 20 years in Oklahoma specializing in cataract surgery, diabetic eye care, LASIK vision correction and treatment of macular disease. In addition to his surgical practice he was an adjunct professor of Optometry at the Northeastern State School of Optometry.

Dr. John T. Bowman was born in Orange, New Jersey and at the age of five, moved to Waco, Texas. His father was a traveling salesman and the family moved many times during his youth throughout central and south Texas.

Dr. Bowman’s education was progressive and well rounded.  He entered Baylor University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry.  Dr. Bowman’s graduate studies commenced at the University of Texas at Austin where he was awarded a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry in 1970. Upon completion of his Ph.D. studies, Dr. Bowman received a one-year Research and Teaching Fellowship at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia.

At this point in his education, Dr. Bowman decided to pursue a medical degree at the University of Texas in San Antonio where, in 1975, he was awarded his Doctorate of Medicine. His internship in Internal Medicine was at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

In 1979, at the Dean A. McGee Eye Institute in Oklahoma City, Dr. Bowman’s residency in Ophthalmology was completed and after his residency, he established a private surgical practice in Ophthalmology in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.  It was there that Dr. Bowman founded the eastern Oklahoma Eye Clinic where he has been in practice for 26 years. The specialties of his practice emphasized cataract surgery, diabetic eye care, LASIK vision correction and treatment of macular disease.

On a personal level, while working as an emergency room doctor in Bethany, Oklahoma, Dr. Bowman met and married his wife Maryann, an ambulance supervisor at the time. Maryann has her degree in Physical Education and has a varied background as well. Not only has she been the office manager to Dr. Bowman’s office, she most recently taught art and coached tennis at Markoma Christian School in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.

Dr. Bowman and Maryann have two wonderful children, Jefferson (Jeff), who is a senior in computer graphics and multimedia at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma and Jennifer, a recent graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Harding University in Searcy Arkansas. Both Jennifer and Jeff intend to pursue graduate degrees in their respective fields in the near future.

In addition to being a husband and father, Dr. Bowman has been a Sunday School Teacher for the past 25 years. He enjoys playing tennis (at a much lower level than Maryann), travel, photography and he is also an avid reader.
