5 Things You May Not Know About Cataracts

March 26th, 2018

cataracts

Although cataracts are a very common condition around the world, many people know surprisingly little about them. Cataracts are primarily an age-related condition where the lens of the eye becomes cloudy over time.

If you aren’t familiar with some of the common signs of cataracts, you won’t be able to catch them early on. Here are five things you may not know about cataracts:

1. There are different types of cataracts

Did you know there are actually different types of cataracts? They are classified based on where and how they form in your eyes.

For instance, nuclear cataracts form in the center of the lens and usually cause the lens to form a yellowish tint. Cortical cataracts tend to form around the edges of the eye.

Secondary cataracts are caused by a disease or drug toxicity. For instance, frequently using steroids for long periods of time can eventually lead to cataracts.

2. Cataracts cannot be prevented

There are ways you help delay the onset of cataracts with simple lifestyle choices. For instance, if you avoid secondhand smoke, wear sunglasses when you are outdoors and exercise regularly you can lower your risk of cataracts.

However, there is no foolproof way to prevent cataracts from ever forming.

3. Cataracts don’t “grow” on your eyes

Many people mistakenly believe that cataracts are a type of film that grows across their eyes. But rather, cataracts are a cloudiness that forms inside the lens of the eye.

4. Individuals of all ages can develop cataracts

As we already stated, cataracts are a common age-related condition. By the age of 80, half of all seniors will either have cataracts or have already gone through cataract surgery.

However, youth alone will not protect your eyes from cataracts. Individuals of any age can develop cataracts and some babies are even born with cataracts.

5. Cataract surgery is the best way to treat cataracts

There are ways you can manage the symptoms of your cataracts without surgery. But if you truly want to improve your vision and quality of life, cataract surgery is your best option.
