There’s an old saying that tells us that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, which rings especially true when it comes to the development and treatment of cataracts. Cataracts affect millions of people each year, but there are helpful prevention tips to keep in mind.

What Are Cataracts?

A cataract is a protein buildup that forms in the formerly clear lens of the eye, which clouds the lens, distorts light, and can make it difficult to read, drive, or distinguish colors. Cataracts can cause a halo-effect from glare at night from the headlights of vehicles traveling on the opposite side of traffic and are generally harder to see in low-light situations. Alternately, cataracts can also cause sensitivity to light, among other symptoms.

Who Gets Cataracts?

Cataracts are a condition that is most often associated with aging, although it is possible for babies to be born with them, and other health problems such as diabetes or glaucoma can serve as a possible trigger. Generally speaking, about 70 percent of people 75 years and older have or have had cataracts, and the condition is one to start watching for with regular eye exams around the age of 40.

Tips for Cataract Prevention

It’s important to note that no studies have proven how to prevent or delay the onset or progression of cataracts. That being said, many doctors do recommend a few strategies that may be helpful.

Suggested strategies include:

  • Don’t smoke (and if you do, talk to your doctor about quitting). There are many options to help you on your journey to quitting smoking including counseling and medications to reduce nicotine cravings.
  • Stay on top of your general health. If you have diabetes or medical conditions that can increase your risk for cataracts, this is even more important. Follow your treatment plan, take any prescribed medications, and see your doctor or doctors as often as recommended.
  • Stick to a regular eye exam schedule. These appointments can help detect cataracts or other eye problems at the earliest stage. Talk to your eye doctor to find out what the best eye exam schedule is for you.
  • Wear your sunglasses. Ultraviolet light from the sun is a possible contributing factor in the development of cataracts. Be sure to stick to sunglasses that block UVB (ultraviolet B) rays from the sun whenever you are out of doors. Practicing safe sun habits can make all the difference when it comes to your eye health.
  • Eat your fruits and veggies! Mom knew what she was talking about when it came to eating healthy.  How do fruits and vegetables help you in your fight against cataracts? It boils down to antioxidants. In the case of cataracts, antioxidants can actually help us maintain our eye health, and anecdotal research says the best source of antioxidants are from fruit and vegetables.
  • Avoid excessive drinking. Alcohol can increase the risk of cataracts.
